Nerd Talk: A Birthday in Binary

Once, I was responsible for buying cake, snacks, and candles for a family member’s birthday celebration.

I ordered the cake and snacks, but when I went to pick them up, I had a small problem: the store had no number-shaped candles. They only had plain candles.

Using just one candle was out of the question. At first, I thought about buying as many candles as the person’s age. But since the person was over 20, I thought that would be too many candles on the cake.

I attended OxenteRails 2009, Rails Summit 2009, CearáOnRails 2009, and now OxenteRails 2010. It became clear that a new nerd culture is spreading faster and faster. I call this new nerd culture Nerd 2.0.

The key point is that you can no longer spend all your time in front of the computer (Nerd 1.0). Now a nerd has to be sociable and balance a love of technology with interpersonal relationships, whether with friends, at work, or elsewhere (Nerd 2.0).

Valério says: A great book for you to read: Getting Real.

Macelo says: What’s the book about?

Valério says: Whatever programming language you use, Get Real. It’s about how to build real software projects.

Macelo says: Haha. I see. I’ve been through an experience. Is it about UML? Or some other kind of modeling?

In today’s Nerd Talk, I’ll broaden the format a little. In addition to the nerd attacks I started with in the first article, I’ll also include something like those bar conversations where, after a few drinks, everyone tries to out-philosophize everyone else :) . More specifically, in this post I’ll share conversations about the general day-to-day of a web developer, held over instant messaging.

This virtual nerd conversation was about programming languages, and more specifically Python and Ruby. I was chatting with my friend Macelo. Here’s the conversation:

This is my first post on the topic of Nerd Talk. I want to make it clear that I do have a social life. :) But I think everyone who works in technology or software development has what I call a nerd attack every now and then.

This section is where I’ll talk about my nerd attacks. The aim is to have a bit of fun and unwind.

This first nerd attack happened while I was reading and practicing exercises from the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards.
