IT Professionals Are Not Superheroes

Before reading the text below, I want to remind you that every profession mentioned is worthy and important. I’m not saying that IT (Information Technology) is superior or inferior to other fields; I only want to show that it is different.

Jobs in computing, or information technology, are very new compared with medicine and engineering. Because of that, and because the field is complex, it’s still not universally clear what people who work in IT do or how to interact with an IT team in a way that solves your problem without getting in the way of theirs.

Nerd Talk: Nerd 2.0

I attended OxenteRails 2009, Rails Summit 2009, CearáOnRails 2009, and now OxenteRails 2010. It became clear that a new nerd culture is spreading faster and faster. I call this new nerd culture Nerd 2.0.

The key point is that you can no longer spend all your time in front of the computer (Nerd 1.0). Now a nerd has to be sociable and balance a love of technology with interpersonal relationships, whether with friends, at work, or elsewhere (Nerd 2.0).

For several years I have been following discussions about which operating system to use. In this post, I will try to offer a different point of view that might serve as a reference for IT managers making decisions. My only goal, though, is to encourage discussion and reflection.
