Stubbornness
I have a simple tip for the stubborn person. Try three times; if it does not work, change the strategy or the objective. If it feels like punching the sharp end of a knife, give up immediately and think of another cause to defend or another objective.
Persistence
The effort necessary for good planning to turn your objective into reality. Without effort and persistence, we get nowhere. Sometimes we get it right the first time; other times we do not. What separates successful people from those who washed ashore is persistence.
Lula’s example
One of the best-known Brazilian examples that varies between stubbornness and persistence is that of former president Lula:
He campaigned against Collor in 1989 and lost; his radical unionist stance greatly influenced that defeat.
Then he lost two more times, in 1994 and 1998, to Fernando Henrique. The three defeats in the first round (so far, we have symptoms of stubbornness: an extremist unionist position).
Finally, abandoning the positions taken in previous campaigns, such as expressing opinions considered radical, Lula chose a moderate discourse in 2002, committing to the economy, respect for contracts, and recognition of the country’s foreign debt, winning the trust of part of the middle class and the business community. We all know the result: two consecutive terms because of his change in stance.
Notice that Lula’s actions, by coincidence, fit my example of stubbornness: try three times, then change something. Lula changed his political stance and reached his desired objective.
When something is not working, pause, take a deep breath, and ask yourself: What do I need to change? You can ask yourself this question every day. Through small daily changes, it is possible to increasingly minimize the frustration generated by stubbornness and enjoy the objectives achieved through persistence.
Accept and embrace change as the only constant in life.
