Most of us intuitively know that the best way to learn English is naturally. Yet many students still choose to use unnatural, ineffective, outdated learning methods … and they remain frustrated. Why is it so frightening for some students to switch to natural methods that don’t require unnecessary effort? (Effortless English)

The answer is, of course, our education system. Around the world, we have an industrial park—a factory-style approach to teaching. Students sit passively, memorizing information through boring routines. They passively listen to lessons and receive grades.
Anyone who understands the brain and how we learn knows that this education system is extremely ineffective. Learning at school is completely unnatural. So why are we taught this way? Because the central role of school is not to nourish our minds, but to teach us to follow rules and train us to be obedient employees. That’s the sad truth. In fact, in some countries, some government officials in the education sector openly admit that they don’t care whether students become fluent in English. In Japan, for example, many officials say the goal of English classes isn’t to learn English, but to train students to be more disciplined.
In other words, officials believe students become stronger by being forced to memorize useless, boring information. It’s no wonder that few Japanese people become fluent in spoken English—unless they learn English outside the school system.
Japan, of course, isn’t the only country with this kind of system. Few school systems teach English naturally.
What’s even sadder is that private English schools are heavily influenced by government school systems. As a result, they still use textbooks, exercises, and grammar memorization as their main methods.
To learn English naturally, you have to leave the school system and become a completely independent learner. You should choose a listen-first method and focus most of your time and energy on listening to comprehensible English audio. Listening is the foundation of natural English learning. It’s the key skill, and you should improve it before focusing on anything else.
This doesn’t mean, however, that you have to be alone. Although listening is at the center, you can still join a community and communicate with other members. In our Effortless English Club, for example, members communicate in our forums and can talk to one another on Skype. They focus their study time on listening, while still enjoying speaking and writing with other members of the community.
This kind of natural learning is fun, friendly, and energetic, unlike most traditional classes. There’s no pressure, just friendly encouragement and support.
This is the natural way to learn: easy, free of unnecessary effort, sociable, and independent. This is how children learn naturally, before they start school. It’s how our brains are naturally designed to learn faster and better.
So there’s nothing to fear. The time has come. Leave the old education system behind. Let it go. Drop the pressure, stress, fear, and boredom.
