My 2008 specialization thesis was about Web Accessibility.
I was greatly inspired by the work of the Acesso Digital team, which some time ago popularized the slogan “Real Accessibility”, the combination of accessibility, web standards, and usability.
In the thesis, I expand on that idea by developing the following teaching formula:
Resources = (Information Architecture + Web Standards + Accessibility + Usability + Keeping Up with Trends)
Real Accessibility = Resources + User Focus + Common Sense
Each topic in the “formula” is explored in depth. In addition, I supplement the thesis with a case study describing my experience building the various versions of the UERN Portal, as well as an interview and a small usability test with a user who accesses the interface using JAWS.
Think of the word “formula” as a teaching aid for creating a sense of unity among the diverse fields involved in web development. It’s not a recipe. Again, it’s only a teaching aid to make the ideas easier to understand.
